The University of Luxembourg (Uni.lu) was founded in 2003, and is, thus, one of the youngest and fast growing universities in Europe. The Uni.lu has exchange agreements and research cooperation with more than 100 universities worldwide, and cross-border study and research is commonplace. Those agreements allow student exchanges – as all Bachelor students have to spend at least one semester at a university abroad – but also involve research projects and exchange of researchers. In addition to these partnerships, there are about 500 Erasmus agreements with foreign universities. Based at the heart of the European Union, the Uni.lu provides a range of high-quality programmes at all levels. It has three faculties and 3 interdisciplinary centres and offers 14 bachelor degrees, 42 master degrees, 4 doctoral schools and 16 vocational training and lifelong learning training courses. The exceptional multilingualism of the University is revealed by the following facts:

The Uni.lu is ranked among the top 250 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020. No. 1 worldwide in the THE “international outlook” Rankings 2020. In the THE subcategory of “Millennials” (universities founded since the year 2000), the Uni.lu is ranked in an excellent 4th position of 64 universities worldwide. No. 161 in the global NATURE index 2018 of universities with increasing publication numbers in first-rate scientific journals and no. 14 among institutions younger than 30 years. The Uni.lu has been awarded two Jean Monnet Chairs on European Studies and a UNESCO Chair in Human Rights. The Uni.lu is international (with an academic staff from 20 countries, and students from 125 countries), multilingual (three official languages: English, French and German) and research-led University, with a strong focus on eight main areas:

Materials science, Computer science and ICT security, European and international law, Finance and financial innovation, Education, Digital and contemporary history, Health and systems biomedicine, Data Modelling & Simulation. All eight priorities are expected to perform highest quality basic research, but all of them should do so on projects with potential relevance for the societal and economic development of the country. Teaching, research and knowledge transfer at the highest international level are three goals we set ourselves. To meet this challenge, the Uni.lu is providing research staff with:

administrative and legal support throughout the valorisation process of research results; policies and procedures regarding ethics in research; a series of services for researchers moving to or from Luxembourg.

Participation in EU Projects and International Activities

Research at the sixteen-year-old university has rapidly taken shape, which can also be underpinned by the high number of scientific publications, which have increased to up to 1888 publications including 789 refereed publications in 2018. Furthermore, the Uni.lu is actively participating in multiple European projects within its areas of expertise. Since the launch of Horizon 2020 and until the end of 2019, 85 grants had been approved, of which 14 were granted in 2019. This represents a total budget of 440 million euros, including a University of Luxembourg share of approximately 50 million euros since the launch of H2020, and 7.5 million euros for the University of Luxembourg in 2019. The University also held 11 ERC grants (including 2 in 2019).
